Before the taste test even began at the Ridge Road pizzeria, the A1 employee tried to convince Portnoy to let him remake the pie, Portnoy said. The intro dragged on as the two talked inside the shop, and when Portnoy finally stepped outside with his pizza, he wasn’t thrilled.
"He wanted to remake the pie," Portnoy tells the camera. "I don’t have 20 minutes to sit while he makes a brand-new pie."
Despite the awkward start, Portnoy went ahead with the review and gave A1 a 6.8—a score the pizzeria says doesn’t reflect the quality of their pies.
Portnoy didn’t trash the slice, but he did take a jab at the restaurant’s name.
“I hate the name of it. I hate generic names,” he said.
YouTube commenters didn't have much sympathy for A1.
"I have no sympathy for owners who don't make their best pies possible the first time," one said. "Glad he didn't let him remake."
"No remakes. big respect," another said. "6.8. old school dave might be back. everybody knows the rules."
A1 didn't let the disappointing review get them down, though. In a statement to Daily Voice, the pizzeria said:
“We stand by our pizzas and were expecting to get at least in the mid-to-high7s. We felt that he was a little rushed and didn’t really give a clear explanation why he gave us the score he did! Of course, we appreciate him taking the time to do the review, though. But hopefully, he’ll give us another chance in the future.”
